Social Media and Collective Consciousness
Technology has been a means of measuring human intellectual advancement for centuries, and its significance in our lives is indisputable. Technology has almost shaped much of how our lifestyle functions. In reality, we are now experiencing faster technological advancements than at any other time. But there is a fact that the problems we are encountering today are many.
So in today’s blog post, I will be giving you a piece of my mind on the concept of collective consciousness in terms of technology. But didn’t this raise a question for you, how can she start writing about technology and end up saying collective consciousness? Well, I will explain to you why the two concepts are profoundly linked.
Collective consciousness is the concept that is related to group thinking. This means that it is the tendency for people to think and act when they are part of a group, which can also be described as a shared sense of awareness within a group of people. The shared sense of awareness can be reflected based on similarities in ideology or culture. Sometimes people with similar backgrounds( say language or experience) share a tendency to think and act alike. Well, this kind of shared belief can greatly impact our thought processing to do things and to convey decisions that will always go in line with the sense of the group. This is evident in the real-world stage as well, where we have several platforms to consume and do so every day.
Before we get into the topic of media, let me refer back to why I included technology in this article. Every day, we consume different information, and it’s important to recognize the impact of these inputs on our lives. This is where media comes in, derived from the word “medium”. This means it’s the bridge between the source and the audience. It’s a medium that allows sensory inputs to get into our minds. Therefore, it’s very important to be selective in what we allow into our minds.
Speaking of media, one of the leading forms of communication is social media. We are now in the digital age and in this ever-evolving landscape of social media that continually structures our understanding of ourselves and the world. We are lost in the continuous hashtags and we are involuntarily or voluntarily influenced by such opinions that the world and our environment keep throwing at us and that changes the way we sense our outside world. I see some things have taken hold and spread through our culture. At this point, confusion is an inevitable part. I love that social media can also be a tool for experience and social change. Though I agree with the constructive usage of social media, I am burdened with a negative view of it. In reality, most people are using social media as a way of advertising themselves and showing off their lifestyles.
The collective consciousness has a profound influence on the behavior and thinking of each and every member of the individual group. Despite these benefits, it has a devastating effect on our creativity. Therefore, it this very important to maintain the balance between our sole belief and collective consciousness. But also bear in mind there is such a thing as collective unconsciousness, where people in a group share a misled understanding of reality, and most people are unaware of this part. All in all, technology can be a powerful tool for promoting collective consciousness and social media can play a significant role in this. Therefore, it’s essential to regulate how we interact with the world around us.
I believe I gave you the crucial piece of information in this article.
