The Impact of TikTok on community building among students

The impact of TikTok is like two sides of the same coin. We can see it as both having positive and negative effects. When we specifically take account of its effect on students, we can get a glimpse of what TikTok does.

In this dynamic and ever-evolving world, it becomes easy through our electronic devices to reach many places without us even moving our feet, to explore and learn about many cultures, and to connect to many people who are far away from us. This opportunity makes students to be well-rounded and life-long learners. Students can also cultivate their talents and passion by connecting with like-minded people or communities.

Students can also use TikTok as a way for their autonomous learning like new languages, craft works, music, and so many others, this then makes them an independent learner and open-minded people to try new things, new hobbies, and new habits through challenges they see in TikTok, example: 75 soft challenge, it could also be a new perspective and attitude.

There are also many informative contents which purposefully made for educational purposes to give students insights and knowledge which in turn sharpens students’ minds. Through the skills and experiences students gain from TikTok, they will learn the different and most effective ways of doing things. Therefore, this will greatly help in addressing poverty. This is very helpful when it comes to developing countries, where practically speaking, advanced technologies are least available. So, students will be initiated to implement what they have seen and learned from TikTok and make a difference.

The dark side of TikTok is through its addictive content, it encourages students to spend most of their free time connected to their electronic devices. This not only is bad for their brain, but also as they are consuming more and more it makes them far away from their parents and causes them to be physically separated. As students spend most of their time on TikTok, seeing and hearing content they shouldn’t have, it causes them to doubt their identity and to less acknowledge their culture. Students also become impatient and they are prone to choose instant gratification over the responsibilities and tasks they have at hand. Because TikTok videos are short and fast, students start to adopt a behavior that hates anything that delays and requires mental labor.

Therefore, we should be careful of what we let our ears and eyes consume, and make sure they are constructive and for our good.
